The European Commission opened an in-depth investigation regarding competition concerns from Novelis’ planned acquisition of Aleris

Today, the European Commission announced the start of an in-depth investigation, in accordance with EU merger regulations, “to ensure that the acquisition of Aleris by Novelis does not have a negative impact on effective competition in aluminium markets and does not lead to less choice and higher prices for European industrial customers”. The Commission stated that it will address competition concerns regarding the effects on supply and prices in markets where the activities of these companies would overlap, such as auto body sheet, building and construction, and HVAC. A decision will be made by August 8, 2019.
